Originally from Mexico, Marely Romero (she/her) is a contemporary dancer, choreographer, educator, and Pilates instructor with over 20 years of experience. Based in the UK since 2022, she has engaged with the British dance scene through residencies and workshops with Gecko, Candoco, and Akram Khan Company.
Marely has worked with some of the most renowned choreographers in Mexico’s contemporary dance scene. She was principal dancer and deputy director with Contempodanza for 17 years, touring internationally across Europe, North and South America. She later joined Aksenti Danza Contemporánea, performing award-nominated works at major venues like the Palacio de Bellas Artes.
Her choreographic work addresses themes of migration, identity, and gender, with performances in Mexico, Colombia, and the Czech Republic.
As an educator, Marely has taught contemporary dance and Pilates for both professionals and the wider public. She held a key academic role at the Escuela Nacional de Danza (INBA), where she coordinated the Contemporary Dance BA and mentored multiple generations of students.
Her recognitions include six Lunas del Auditorio nominations and the Best Female Performer Award at the International Contemporary Dance Festival in Monterrey (2009). Now based in London, Marely continues to develop her artistic voice and share her practice internationally through performance, choreography, and teaching.
